Robin Whitsell, President and Founder of Whitsell Innovations (WI), Inc., a certified woman-owned full-service medical and scientific writing company headquartered in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, visited with Postdoctoral and Doctoral scholars in life sciences at UNC after her presentation entitled “Scope of Career Opportunities of Medical Communications.
“After the Whitsell presentation on medical writing, UNC postdocs were very excited and inspired to learn the alternative ways in which their skills and disposition could be utilized,” says Dr. Patrick Jeffs, Career Counselor, Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. “For postdocs that have always been seeking a route to academia, learning about alternative career routes with companies such as Whitsell was an invaluable experience.”
Ms. Whitsell addressed medical writing for pharmaceutical, biotech and device companies including the documentation required for submissions to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) during the pre-clinical and clinical development process. In addition, Ms. Whitsell discussed how industry clients use medical writers to share clinical data in manuscripts, training materials, and presentations.
[quotes class=”none”]“It’s exciting to be invited back to UNC to talk about a transition from academia into the healthcare industry. Many of these bright scholars may not be able to find well-funded, research laboratories within academic institutions,” says Ms. Whitsell. “For them, looking at industry jobs where they can have an impact on pharmaceutical and medical device testing and approval allows them to integrate their scientific interests into an industry career.” [/quotes]
